Mitsubishi Chemical develops SMC hybrid molding technology

HC Plastics News: According to foreign media reports, Mitsubishi Chemical Corp. developed a carbon fiber sheet molding compound (SMC) hybrid molding technology. This technology is the core forming technology for automotive structural materials and is designed to support its product solutions. To this end, Mitsubishi Chemical used the molding technology of CPCS.rl, an Italian company, and Mitsubishi Chemical also invested in the company.

SMC usually uses short chopped fibers, but Mitsubishi Chemical uses carbon fiber fabric. Compared with the conventional SMC process, the material strength is higher after the press molding method (Pressmolding). According to the company's vision, non-crimp fabric (NCF) carbon fiber fabrics will be used in the future because of the minimal number of bumps and indentations of the NCF.

Mitsubishi Chemical's molding technology not only ensures the strength of the material, but also produces pre-glyse compression molding (PCM)/SMC hybrid molding technology to produce complex parts. Both PCM and SMC technologies use thermosetting resins, but PCM uses fast curing epoxy resin. Both fiber and short fiber SMC can utilize the same vinyl ester resin (vinylester). Resin). For this reason, after using the SMC technology, the adhesive strength at the interface is high.

Although the thermoplastic resin is highly viscous and difficult to impregnate, the SMC molding process is suitable for materials with a mass of 3,500 g/m2, and the parts produced are complex in shape and more rigid. Mitsubishi Chemical plans to promote the market-oriented application of hybrid SMC technology in the segment of automotive grade structural materials.
