Agricultural experts analyze the hot issues of genetically modified food safety

Not long ago, an economist said in a television interview program that genetically modified corn has allowed rats to grow tumors and even animals in the United States have been banned from feeding genetically modified feed. The issue of the safety of genetically modified foods has once again become a social focus. Some people have questioned whether genetically modified foods cause cancer or people "after sterilization." Foreigners do not eat genetically modified foods? To this end, the reporter interviewed a number of experts to verify relevant hot issues.

Can genetically modified foods cause cancer and infertility?

Some people think that eating genetically modified foods can cause cancer and sterilization, and planting genetically modified crops will lead to land scrapping. In this regard, Luo Yunbo, dean of the College of Food Science and Nutritional Engineering at China Agricultural University, said that these are false statements that have been repeatedly hyped and have been clarified many times before. He said that before entering the market, GM foods must go through stringent toxicity, sensitization, teratogenicity and other safety evaluation and approval procedures. All genetically modified foods that have passed safety assessments and obtained safety certificates are safe and can be eaten with confidence.

Luo Yunbo said that with regard to the French professor’s experiment of feeding rats with genetically modified corn to produce tumors, the European Food Safety Authority has completely rejected its research conclusions; China’s consumption of genetically modified oil is a remark in areas where genetically modified diseases are concentrated because there is no epidemiological investigation. At that time, it was rejected by medical experts; the claim that China's cultivation of genetically modified crops has caused land to be abandoned has long been clarified.

China's genetically modified cotton planting area is stable and its production is normal, and eating genetically modified foods will lead to "sterilization" is purely ostracized, because the rumors involved in Guangxi has never grown and sold genetically modified corn, and Dica corn is not a genetically modified variety. The College Student Sexual Health Survey report does not address the issue of genetic modification at all.

Huang Dazhao, a researcher at the Institute of Biotechnology of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, said that the European Union had spent 260 million pounds on risk assessment of more than 50 genetically modified safety projects and concluded in the European Commission report in 2000 and 2010 that there is no scientific evidence for genetic modification. Crops pose a higher risk to the environment and food and feed safety than traditional crops; GM crops may be safer than traditional crops and food because of more precise technology and more stringent regulation.

Based on a large number of studies, the World Health Organization and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations believe that any genetically modified food that is listed through safety evaluation is as safe as traditional food and can be eaten with confidence. An indisputable fact is that so far, since the commercialization of genetically modified foods, there has not been a confirmed food safety issue.

Do you eat genetically modified foods abroad?

According to the 2012 annual report issued by the International Organization for the Application of Agricultural Biotechnology Applications, the global acreage of GM crops has grown from 1.7 million hectares in 1996 to 170 million hectares in 2012, an increase of 100 times in 17 years. By the end of 2012, 59 countries and regions around the world have approved the import of genetically modified crops for food, feed, or planting. Among them, 28 countries have approved the commercial cultivation of 25 genetically modified crops.

"Europe is not zero-tolerance on genetically modified foods. On the contrary, Europe is the region where imports and consumption of genetically modified products are relatively large." Huang Dazhao said that in 1998, the European Union approved the cultivation and marketing of genetically modified corn, rapeseed, soybeans, potatoes, etc. in Europe. Except for a handful of feed or industrial uses, most of it is used as food. In 2012, five countries including Spain, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Romania were still approved to plant genetically modified crops, except for a few that were used as feed or industrial uses, and most of them were used as food.

According to reports, the United States is the largest producer and consumer of genetically modified crops in the world, and it is also the country with the longest time for the consumption of genetically modified agricultural products. 86% of maize grown in the United States, 93% of soybeans, and 95% of sugar beets are GM crops. According to the latest data from the World Food and Agriculture Organization's Food Balance Sheet, 68% of corn produced in the United States, 72% of soybeans, and 99% of sugar beets are sold domestically. For many years, Japan is the world's largest corn importer and the third largest importer of soybeans. In 2010, Japan imported 14.343 million tons of US corn and 2.347 million tons of US soybeans, most of which were genetically modified.

Why does China need to vigorously develop genetic modification?

At present, there is no commercialization of genetically modified staple foods in China. However, both developed countries and developing countries are now taking the development of genetically modified technologies as an important force for occupying the commanding heights of future international competition in agriculture and promoting a new round of agricultural science and technology revolution. Transgenic technology is the core of agricultural biotechnology and has been called "one of the most rapidly applied major technologies in human history."

Luo Yunbo said that biotechnology such as genetic modification is a powerful means of solving China's food and environmental problems. Genetically modified crops have produced or enhanced traits such as resistance to insects, disease, high yield, and high quality, and they can exert good economic and ecological benefits in agricultural production. “The effect of increasing the yield of transgenic crops is objective. It is worth mentioning that the production of genetically modified soybeans in Brazil, Argentina and other countries has increased significantly and has become the second and third largest soybean exporter in the world. After insect-resistant maize, the yield has doubled, from a maize-importing country to an exporter; after the introduction of transgenic insect-resistant cotton, India has also become an exporter from a cotton-importing country."

Wu Kongming, the deputy head of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, believes that China’s 1.8 billion mu of arable land, even on the basis of “nine consecutive increase” in grain last year, still imported more than 58 million tons of soybeans, plus rice, wheat, barley, rape, etc. It is 80 million tons, and about 800 million mu will be needed to convert it into arable land. If we do not vigorously develop genetic technology and ensure food self-sufficiency, we may have to give up a large number of crops such as oil and cotton.

Huang Dazhao told reporters that soybeans as an example, China's non-genetically modified soybean yield is low, with an average yield of only 120 kg per mu. In China, more than 50 million tons of soybeans are imported annually. If we measure the current varieties and technologies, we need more than 400 million mu of arable land. However, China does not have so much reserve arable land. Therefore, we use foreign and domestic resources to co-ordinate two markets. It is an inevitable choice for our country. Author: Liu Hongli
