New nano-textiles can “wash off” stains with sunlight

The research team of Australia's Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology has recently developed a new method to promote the growth of special nanostructures. The textiles made of it can be directly exposed to sunlight and can directly degrade the above stains. This means that after the clothes are dirty they can be “washed” in the sun and the washing machine may be eliminated.

According to the report of the Physicist Organization Network on the 22nd, the study paved the way for the enhancement of nano-textiles' future self-cleaning of stains and stains, which was published in the latest issue of the "Advanced Materials Interface" journal.

The leader of the team, Ramanathan, said that the research results have been developed for a variety of applications based on the catalyst industry, such as agricultural chemicals, pharmaceuticals, etc., and can be easily scaled to industrial production levels. He said: “The advantage of textiles is their three-dimensional structure, their ability to absorb light, and in turn accelerating the degradation of organic matter. There is still a lot of work to be done before the popularity of the textiles can start to eliminate washing machines. Progress has laid a solid foundation for the future development of textiles that are completely self-cleaning."

According to reports, when nano-materials are "impregnated" in light, the energy they receive can be increased to create "hot electrons." These "hot electrons" release a lot of energy, enabling nanomaterials to degrade organic matter. The new method allows the developed nanomaterials to reach a stable structure within 30 minutes, and some of the fabrics can clean themselves when exposed to sunlight for less than 6 minutes.

Currently, researchers face the challenge of making this concept outside the laboratory, trying to make these nanostructures industrial scale, and permanently attach it to textiles.

The researchers said that the next step will be to test the performance of this enhanced nano-textile to remove some organic compounds to detect how quickly they can remove the stains that consumers often get on their clothes, such as tomato sauce or drunk. (Reporter Hualing)
