Atushi Urakawa, a scientist at the Catalan Institute of Chemistry in Spain, led a team to investigate. For the first time, the team used only one step to convert 95% of carbon dioxide (CO2) into methanol and use it as an industrial fuel.
According to the group's recycling method published in the Journal of Catalysis, it is based on the reaction of carbon dioxide plus hydrogen at high pressure.
On Tuesday, the Catalan Institute of Chemical Research stated in a statement that it has applied for a patent for the process and has contacted the industrial sector in hopes of developing and selling the new process through a licensing agreement or a joint development plan.
