Some pregnant women worry that wearing a seat belt in a car may harm the baby. However, a new study in the United States shows that the opposite is true. If you do not wear a seat belt, pregnant women are more likely to be injured in a car accident or even cause fetal death. The research report was published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Haywood Brown, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Duke University Medical Center in the United States, who is in charge of the study, said that not all pregnant women are willing to wear seat belts, which is what researchers are worried about.
Brown and his colleagues surveyed 126 pregnant women who had suffered a car accident at the Duke University Hospital between 1994 and 2000. These pregnant women are in the middle or late pregnancy. In the 86 pregnant women who had a seatbelt in a car accident, the fetal death rate was 3.5%, and in 12 untrained pregnant women, the fetal death rate reached 25%.
The survey also found that most pregnant women who are not wearing seat belts are mothers, and mothers who already have children tend to wear a seat belt because they want to wear a child with a seat belt.
Brown said that because the seat belts can reduce the harm to pregnant women and the fetus when a car accident occurs, pregnant women should wear seat belts. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that pregnant women should wear a seat belt at all times and that the harness belt can be placed below the hip to avoid the abdomen.
